Gilda's Club South Jersey organizes a variety of fundraising events and initiatives throughout the year. This is a huge part of how we survive! Every dollar raised makes a difference. Everyone who participates becomes part of our community-building process. You help by just showing up and having fun! We also need volunteers to keep our events running smoothly. Gilda's Club South Jersey
has launched Atlantic County's
first Dragon Boat Club!

Gilda's Club South Jersey has formed a new Dragon Boat Club called Gilda's Gladiators! We hope to make this an on-going component of our free program of social and emotional support for South Jersey people whose lives have been touched by cancer.

Did you know that Dragon Boat Racing is the fastest growing water sport in North America? Dragon boats are the world's largest flat water racing canoes, propelled by a crew of 20 paddlers, plus a drummer and steerperson. The paddlers move in unison, combining strength with teamwork in a boat adorned with an elaborate design that originates in China. The sport is easy to learn and does not require special athletic ability. Team members have fun on the water, gain physical strength and build cameraderie.

Practice sessions are held at the Viking Rowing Club in Ventnor Heights. Our club will initially consist of two teams: breast cancer survivors and a mixed team of other cancer survivors and their supporters -- both men and women.

Gilda's Club South Jersey is providing the Club with administrative support, a meeting place, bookkeeping and public relations support. The Viking Rowing Club is graciously donating mooring privileges and expert coaching.

A generous donor has gifted us with enough funds to make a downpayment on a boat. But to pay off the boat, fully equip our team and fund other team-related expenses, we need to raise a total of $19,750:

40' Dragon Boat with BUK hull: $14,500
25 paddles @ $45 each
25 personal floation devices @$35 each
Insurance: $400/year
Rack rental: $750/year
75 team T-shirts: $8/each
Coaching: $1,500 per season

Or, here's another way to help: Our boat will be decorated with "dragon scale" decals. An individual or corporation may purchase one 6"x6" decal for $50 with your name or message on it. Use the mail-in Order Form at right to purchase a Dragon Boat scale.
