Wawaversaries

Congratulations Brigantine Wawa Stores!

Rick Pitman, our board chair said it best, “Were it not for the support of Wawa and its customers, Gilda’s Club South Jersey might not exist.”

There is a lot of truth to that statement.  It is a relationship that began in 2002 with staff and volunteers standing outside Wawa stores in Atlantic County collecting change in a fundraising drive we called “Gilda’s Big Day.”

That started an on-going conversation between Board Member Lynn Dooley and several Wawa managers--Joe Sexton, in Margate and Michael Rainey, in Ventnor.  Those discussions paved the way for Gilda’s Club South Jersey to become a recipient of in-store campaigns managed by Wawa New Jersey Charities Committee.  In the past five years those efforts have raised $1.2 million!

At the Wawaversaries of its two stores in Brigantine this past Wednesday, we got to celebrate with customers, associates, and staff from the home office in Wawa, PA and accept a ceremonial check from Wally, the Wawa Goose, in the amount of $200,000.  No surprise that Wawa can throw a fun party—complete with free coffee all day!

Now back to Rick.  He also wasn’t fooling when he said, “Free isn’t cheap.”  Each year we need to raise $750,000 to provide over 1000 activities for anyone living with cancer and their family—at no charge.  The dollars raised in the Wawa stores has allowed us to purchase and renovate our permanent home at 700 New Road.  The check that Wally handed over on Wednesday is going to help us pay down that mortgage.

That’s the short version of why our building is called Gilda’s Club South Jersey at Wawa Center.  Thank you all the good people at Wawa and all their great customers.
