When Gilda’s Club came to town in
2002, I saw it as the best opportunity to bring people together with the
common need for cancer support, in a friendly, fun, caring, social
environment. It would give them a much needed break from the medical
part of their lives. What a novel idea! Since then, I have met
the most wonderful people – from the kids to the adults, members and other
volunteers, and the public who are still learning how lucky we are to have
Gilda’s Club here in our own neighborhood. When I first went out and spoke
about Gilda’s Club at community fairs, club meetings, church groups and
classes, no one knew who we were or what we did. I told the story over and
over to everyone I met. Now those same people come up to me and tell me
their stories about what Gilda’s Club has meant to them over the years.
They had often thought there was no place
for them to get the kind of support that our Club provides. What a warm
and fuzzy feeling that gives a person! When I lead a
“Volunteer Training” I am able to speak from my heart to new volunteers and
my hope is that they will get the same joy and satisfaction that I do at
Gilda’s Club. Many of our volunteers started as members and are moving
into their new volunteer roles with the unique perspective only they can
have, from their own personal experiences. I am privileged to learn
from them when they tell their stories and warmly invite new members to our
Club. It has been
quite a rewarding experience to be able to say I am a part of this
Club. Our volunteers are the most caring, talented, devoted, sincere
volunteers I know. All of the volunteers are clearly here because they want
to be. When I cook breakfast with Emiri and Howard on Super Saturday,
all of the volunteers always talk about how they look forward to being there
with the families. We always notice when it seems too long
between weeks when we are able to be together. I believe it is like
that with any of the activities. Because of the leadership of the
all of the staff and the Board of Directors at Gilda’s Club, this will always
be the place to be if you are living with cancer. And I could not be
happier to be here with all our members, staff and volunteers! We have
the best! Gilda's Night Out @ A fundraiser to support people in our
