Barry Keefe
I am a member and volunteer at Gilda’s Club, and am looking
forward to facilitating a monthly Men’s Night at the clubhouse beginning in
April.
My first connection to Gilda’s came through an
invitation from a friend to my wife, Eleanore, to join in paddling on the
Gilda’s Club South Jersey dragonboat. Eleanore frequently, and I
occasionally, paddled and became part of the community that formed around the
boat. I had the unforgettable experience of participating in the Vermont
Dragonboat Festival on Lake Champlain in August of 2007 and 2008 – a gathering
of cancer survivors and friends. I saw on our dragonboat, and in Vermont, the
incredible power of a supporting community.
I got to know the volunteer community at Gilda’s through helping
them through their several moves to new locations, until they found the new
and superb Linwood clubhouse. I think I’ve finally been forgiven for spilling
ink from a printer I was carrying on the brand new carpet (Hint: don’t store
a printer on its side!).
As a member, I’ve been touched by cancer (cancer deaths
affecting me have been my best friend of melanoma, my uncle of colon cancer
and three close relatives of Eleanore). I volunteer mostly at Noogieland on
Saturdays, where I’ve been doing some music with the kids and their parents,
staffing the front desk, enjoying the wonderful breakfasts and participating
in the “Small Talk” group.
I’m looking forward to the first Men’s Night, at 6pm on Monday,
April 26. In the tradition of Gilda’s, there will be food, conversation and
listening. I think we men who have been touched by cancer have a lot to learn
from each other. If you are a member, feel free to invite a friend. If you’ve
never been to Gilda’s, come as you are. If you have ideas for shaping Men’s
Night, please bring them along. And please register by calling Gilda’s (609)
926-2699.

Giving
$10 has never been easier! Just text message “Gilda” from your cellular
phone to the # 85944. You will then receive a message asking you to
confirm your donation. Reply to the message with the word “Yes” and
your donation is complete. That’s it! $10 will be charged to your
monthly phone bill. Standard text messaging rates apply. Your
donation goes directly to Gilda’s Club South Jersey to help ensure cancer
support for the whole family, the whole time. Thank You!
