My name is Ellen Appleton, and this is my story. When I was five years old, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. At such a young age, I really didn’t know what was going on in my family and not understanding why all the changes were happening. By the time I was seven, the cancer came back and had metastasized to her bone. At ten years old there was a defining moment in my life that drastically changed my role from a child whose mom had cancer to the young adult that took responsibility and control when things went wrong. From chemo and hospital visits to making sure my mom was taken care of, I had to balance being a pre-teen and all of its life changes while going through the hardships at home. About a year and a half before entering high school, things had gotten progressively worse.

Gilda’s Club came into my life in September of my freshman year of high school and it couldn’t have been at a better time.  It was by chance that I looked up at the TV screen in homeroom to give me the announcement that Gilda’s Club had come to Mainland Regional High School. It opened up a door (no pun intended) that, as my mom got even sicker, gave me an outlet while I went through these horrible changes. Seven months later, on April 30th 2005, my mom passed away. After my mom passed, I got tremendous support from Gilda’s Club.  Most importantly, it gave me a place where I could talk and cry out when I needed help. The support I received not only from the program leaders but from the fellow teens I shared a room with gave me peace as my world seemed to be crashing around me. Now, almost five years later and a sophomore in college – I can speak openly about my experiences and talk to those who are or have gone through what I have. Gilda’s Club saved me, giving me a chance to regain normalcy after everything that happened. I know for a fact I wouldn’t be the same person I am today if I didn’t have Gilda’s Club, I would be far worse. I wanted to say thank you to Gilda’s Club and my Teen Group “Family” because I wouldn’t be the same person if it wasn’t for them.
